We were excited to see Wells Fargo offer a product to compete with payday lenders but regulators do not like payday loans and have made it very difficult for banks to offer products to the financially excluded. As a result Wells no longer offers this product. On their site they say, "Due to recent changes to federal regulations we are not able to offer the service in its current form and will unfortunately need to turn off the service."
We find this very unfortunate because we believe increased competition in this space improves pricing and offerings available to the underbanked market. Instead, we see an effort to ban these products which drives out products like Wells that are the most competitively priced and quite honestly more above board than many other services.
What follows is our previous review of the product that is now being phased out.
Wells Fargo is one of the few national banks offering emergency cash products. This product is a great product with the only draw back being that one must be a Wells Fargo customer with a checking account to benefit from it. So if you are already a customer this is great otherwise it could be difficult to get started in an emergency.
If you are a customer it is very easy and there's no need to apply. One just signs up for it in their account. See our full review of this product.
